Stocks are categorized into large-cap, mid-cap, and small-cap. A company's impact on the index is measured by its market capitalization or price-weighting. The latter uses the market value of its outstanding shares to determine how big a company has an impact. As a result, large caps, which are the more valuable companies, will have a bigger impact on the index than mid-caps or small caps.
